Social Networking – A Waste of Time? Tuesday, Mar 10 2009

Social Networking

Social Networking

There has been quite a buzz about social networking and whether it’s a waste of time for your business. Can you really market effectively on social networking sites? How is this possible? Most people believe that these sites have a lot of people that are attempting to sell their opportunity to each other.

However, statistics show that there are 75,000 people/day looking for home based businesses. I’m sure this number is growing daily especially with 70,000 layoffs on Bloody Monday. What a better place to find these people than on social networking sites! The key is to find your target market and focus your efforts in those areas. Here are some of the sites that I visit and have had many people join my business opportunity.

Myspace – This is my #1 lead source for my business in the social networking arena although many people continuously bash Myspace.  That’s ok because I’ll just take that business, thank you very much!

Facebook – is quickly taking over the #2 spot and could be my #1 source very soon. There are some great features such as Facebook Pages for your business.

Twitter – is the newest buzz word in the neighborhood and I’ve actually had a few sales from this source already! Make sure to check out my Twitter tips to grow your business. I also highly recommend following Mari Smith on Twitter and Facebook.  She gave me all the tips for my Facebook business page.

Sta.rtup.biz – is a great place to meet like-minded individuals and those looking to start a new business. I’ve received my largest amount of traffic from posting this article to this site. I also gained 700 new Twitter followers from one twitter blog post on this site!

Youtubevideos are the wave of the future. Many people love watching videos more than reading content so this is a great avenue to promote your business.

Here are some professional networking sites that you can align yourself with potential business partners.

Professional Networking Sites
Ecademy
LinkedIn
Ziggs
Xing

One of the main keys to success is to plan. Many people spend too much time on the social networking sites and do not get much done with their actual business. I’m not advocating joining every single site but choose a select few and focus on them.

Be sure to allot a certain amount of time for each site so you don’t run into the problem of spending all day on certain sites. For example, I try my best to get on Twitter in the morning, afternoon and evening for 10 – 20 minutes each time. This allows me to interact with different people as there are different high traffic times for Twitter.

My top places to visit on a daily basis are Twitter, Facebook and Star.tup.biz. Go make some friends as people are more inclined to buy from people they know. Which ones are your favorite social networking sites?

Do You Retweet? Tuesday, Feb 10 2009

twitstamp.com

RT, hashtags, all this new stuff to learn about Twitter. Every time I turn around there is something new to learn! It’s like keeping up with the lastest fashion trends…Do you Retweet a lot?

Retweet is the newest addition to Twitter that allows your tweet to be sent around Twitter virally.

Great things to retweet about would be:

1. Breaking News – I had a conversation all day with @DanaWillhoit about the octuplets drama!

2. How To’s – more and more people are looking how to do certain things so learn what things people are looking for most

3. Questions can be retweeted to others to find answers

4. Charities – there were hundreds of retweets for the Australian fire aid.

Get more involved and retweet! Especially my stuff! LOL Just kidding..No I’m not so get over there and retweet my stuff! 🙂

Watch this crazy video of Jason Moffat’s twittertreasure.com fully utilizing the retweet feature:

What Makes Twitter So Hot? Saturday, Jan 3 2009

twitter1

Oh Twitter how I love thee! Let me count the ways…Although you might not hear those exact words said very often online, you know it’s true when you login to your Twitter account or visit someone’s blog.

With the emergence of WordPress plug-ins like TwitThis and the various twitter badges found on numerous blogs throughout the Internet, it is obvious people adore Twitter. Just what is it that makes this social networking site so lovable? Let’s find out.

The question posed by Twitter, “What are you doing?” has become almost as popular as AOL’s “You’ve got mail.” So much so that it has even caught the eye of offline news mediums such as USA Today, CNN, and ABC. This helps to make the application popular all on its own. Those who think Twitter is just a place for computer or Internet geeks can rest assured it’s nothing of the sort.

For many, Twitter is a way to interact with like-minded individuals. Whether one is a stay at home mom who craves adult conversation, an at home worker who misses the water cooler chit-chat from past jobs, or the business owner who wants to reach more of their target market, this form of social media fills a need. It makes it easier for people to connect with others in a way they might not have previously been able to in the past.

The fact Twitter is easily accessible and even simpler to navigate makes it a favorite as well. Anyone can create a twitter account of their own with nothing more than a user name and a password. Once that’s done, it’s easy to customize your profile and begin following other tweeps, as those who use Twitter affectionately call one another.

To follow what another person is doing, just visit their page and click the follow button. You’ve now been added as a follower and when you login to your account you will see their messages on your screen.

Twitter’s arrival has also lead to the creation of different platforms and applications to make it appealing to just about everyone. Popular applications include, TwitterFox, Twhirl, TweetDeck,TweetMyBlog, and TweetLater. TwitterFox and Twhirl give users who prefer the instant messaging look and feel a way to use Twitter in somewhat the same manner. TwitterFox is an extension for the Firefox browser and Twhirl is a desktop application.

TweetMyBlog is a way to automatically post updates from a user’s blog to Twitter. In order to use it all one needs is a Twitter account and an RSS feed from their blog. It will automatically posts a tweet using your account when your blog is updated.

TweetDeck is another desktop application that allows for more organization of updates. Instead of posting all a users tweets one right after another, it allows the user to organize tweets into separate columns within the application. For those who have customers and friends on Twitter this is a great feature. I was a little turned off by the initial black and gray desktop colors but easily changed the colors to fit my personality.

There are some newer applications such as TwitWall and MyTweetSpace. TwitWall allows you to customize your profile with video, pictures and bookmarking options. MyTweetSpace allows more design options for your profile. Check out some of these features and discover your favorites. I’m off to tweet with my tweeps!

You Might Be Addicted To Social Networking If… Friday, Dec 19 2008

catlaugh

This is hilarious! Let me know which one that you are most guilty of..Haa! Haa!

  1. Your significant other asks you to get off the computer and you tell them two more minutes, but they know that means two more hours.
  2. You think a night out on the town is drinking a beer while hanging out on Twitter.
  3. You take your laptop to the bathroom instead of a newspaper or magazine.
  4. You eat in front of your computer so much you keep a salt and pepper shaker on your desk.
  5. You feel you need to lose a few pounds and you start exercising in front of your computer…while sitting down.
  6. You are usually working when everyone else is asleep…and working when they are awake.
  7. You check your e-mail every five minutes hoping to see the message, “You have another sale…”
  8. You think fast food drive-throughs aren’t fast enough because you will have to leave the computer, so you call the local pizza delivery place instead.
  9. Your significant other has ever asked you what’s on TV and you say, “I’ll look it up online!” but really you just wanted a reason to get back on the computer.
  10. You have forgotten to take a shower because you got up and went straight to the computer.
  11. You have considered publishing your web site or information product in a different language to increase sales.
  12. You have crumbs somewhere near or on your computer right now.
  13. You always find some way to lure your friends or company over to your computer while they are visiting so you can show off.
  14. Your significant other sends you an e-mail instead of telling you dinner is done.
  15. You have ever fed your newborn while you were working on your business.

OMG! I’m cracking up over here. I got this email and there are 200 total. Of course I’ll just share 15 for today but man, I’m in tears over here!

Popular Twitter Plug-ins for WordPress Blogs Wednesday, Nov 26 2008

WordPress is one of the main choices for a blogging platform on the Internet today. Twitter has quickly become the hottest micro-blogging application. So can you imagine what occurs when the two meet and marry? A partnership that creates a most wonderful thing – that’s what!

Well, maybe not wonderful but then again it all depends on how you look at it. With the proper plug-ins you can create an awesome social networking tool since both Twitter and WordPress are both strong contenders in the social media arena. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular Twitter plug-ins that you can use on your WordPress blog to create a social power house match made in heaven.

TwitThis is a simple way for people to send Twitter messages about your blog post. When visitors to your website click on the TwitThis button or link, it takes the URL of the webpage and creates a shorter URL using the TinyURL tool. Then visitors can send the shortened URL and a description of the web page to all of their friends on Twitter. Talk about word-of-mouth! The TwitThis button is a cute little button that you can add to the end of your blog posts making it readily available to your readers once they’ve finished browsing your post.

TweetMyBlog is a plug-in that will automatically announce your blog posts to your Twitter followers and include a link directly to the post. This plug-in will also include a sidebar widget that will pull in your latest tweets and link them back to your Twitter profile page. Finally the creators of this plug-in have an affiliate program that is available to every “TweetMyBlog” user.

TwitterFeed is a plug-in that allows you to simply promote your blog to your twitter followers. Much like TweetMyBlog, but not as extensive. You can customize the message that will announce your blog post to all your twitter pals. Again, a direct URL is provided in the tweet.

TwitterTools is a plug-in that creates an integration between your WordPress blog and your Twitter account. With TwitterTools you can pull your tweets into your blog and create new tweets on blog posts and also from within WordPress.

TwitterBadge is not so much a plug-in as it is a way for you to let others know that you are a user, maybe even addict – it’s ok we won’t tell, of Twitter. There are many badges from the cute little Twitter bird to the simple badge that basically says, “Hey, look at me. I Twitter too!” When people see your badge and click it, they’ll be taken to your twitter profile.

The bottom line – Twitter is the place to be online, but you may not always be able to be there as much as you would like. By using the above plug-ins you can automate your own WordPress blog and Twitter to create a beautiful traffic generator and a great way to connect with your tweeps.

Has The Internet Changed Your World? Tuesday, Oct 7 2008

It’s amazing how far we’ve come in the internet world. There are more and more people that are sharing their courting stories and now married that started on the internet, more new friends that are created via the internet and old friends that have reconnected as a result of it all.

I know personally that there are times when the power goes out at my house and I say, “Oh that’s ok, I’ll just check my email or chat with my online friends.” Umm..hello! The power is out! LOL That’s how ingrained in my head the use of the internet is in my household that I think it has a mind of its own without power!

The internet has also changed the way business is conducted. The world of advertising and promotion has turned a new leaf. Internet exposure is now one of the most lucrative ways to generate business. Internet marketing, guerilla marketing, social networking, attraction marketing and personal branding to name just a few are all major topics of conversation for the top producers in business advertising.

I also found it Incredible how CNN and other news media are using Twitter now. The social media phenomenon is getting into mainstream media and into everyone’s households. I always make sure to spend time w/my family because it can suck up all of your time if you are not careful. I definitely appreciated my Diva’s Within group when they declared a day to spend time with family.

So what about you? How has the internet changed your world? Did you meet your significant other via the net? Has your business expanded tremendously from the net? Let me know. Also take some time to view this video of my husband and family.
